Hot Desk vs Dedicated Desk: Which One Is Right for You?
When you first sign up for a coworking space, the choice between a hot desk and a dedicated desk can feel trivial. They're both desks. They're both in the same building. How different can they really be?
Quite different, as it turns out.
What is a hot desk?
A hot desk means you show up, find an available seat, and get to work. No assigned spot, no permanent setup — just you, your laptop, and whichever corner of the space you claim that morning. It's flexible, usually cheaper, and works perfectly for people who don't need to be in the office every day.
Freelancers, consultants, and remote workers who split their time between locations tend to love it. You pay for access, not for a specific seat — which means you only pay when you actually show up.
What is a dedicated desk?
A dedicated desk is exactly what it sounds like. A permanent, assigned workspace that belongs to you. Your monitor stays there. Your keyboard, your notebooks, your coffee mug — all exactly where you left them. Nobody else uses it, and nobody moves your things.
For people who work from the office four or five days a week, this is usually the better option. The routine of arriving at your own space is surprisingly powerful. It reduces the small friction of finding a seat, setting up, and settling in — which adds up more than you'd think over weeks and months.
The real question is: how often do you actually show up?
If you're in the office one or two days a week, a hot desk makes total sense. You get the professional environment, the community, the amenities — without paying for a seat that sits empty half the time.
If you're there three days or more, a dedicated desk usually pays for itself in reduced stress and improved focus alone. The ability to leave a second monitor, keep your files organised, and arrive without having to think about where you'll sit is worth more than the price difference.
One more thing to consider
Hot desking puts you next to different people every day. That's great for networking, serendipitous conversations, and the kind of energy that comes from variety. Dedicated desking gives you neighbours — familiar faces, shared routines, and the quiet comfort of knowing your environment.
Neither is better. They're just different. The right choice depends entirely on how you work best.
