Deep Work Is Dead. Here's How to Bring It Back

Cal Newport wrote about deep work in 2016. Nearly a decade later, the problem he described has only gotten worse.

The average knowledge worker switches tasks every three minutes. It takes over twenty minutes to fully regain focus after an interruption. And yet the modern work environment — open-plan offices, constant Slack pings, back-to-back video calls — seems almost perfectly designed to prevent sustained concentration.

The result is a strange paradox: we're busier than ever, but producing less of the work that actually matters.

What deep work actually means

Deep work is not about working longer hours or trying harder. It's about creating the conditions for your brain to engage fully with a single, cognitively demanding task — without interruption. Writing, coding, designing, strategising, analysing. The kind of work that moves things forward.

Shallow work — emails, admin, quick replies, routine tasks — has its place. But it expands to fill whatever time you give it. Left unchecked, it crowds out everything else.

Why your environment matters more than your willpower

Most productivity advice focuses on habits, routines, and mindset. And those things matter. But environment is more powerful than any of them. You can have the best morning routine in the world, but if you're sitting in a noisy open-plan space with notifications firing every few minutes, you're fighting a losing battle.

The most productive people don't rely on willpower to focus. They design their environment so that focus is the path of least resistance. Separate space for deep work. Phone in another room. Notifications off. A clear signal to the brain that this time is different.

The best coworking spaces understand this. They're designed with distinct zones — areas for collaboration and areas for concentration. Phone booths for calls that need privacy. Quiet floors where the unspoken rule is simple: heads down, no interruptions.

Coming to a dedicated workspace also creates a ritual. The commute, the coffee, the act of sitting down at a desk that exists for one purpose — it all signals to your brain that it's time to do real work. Remote workers who struggle with focus often find that simply changing their environment makes an immediate difference.

Practical steps that actually work

Start by identifying your two or three most important deep work tasks for the week. Schedule them like meetings — specific times, specific locations, non-negotiable. Tell the people who need to know that you'll be unavailable. Then show up and do the work.

It sounds simple because it is. The hard part is protecting that time from everything else that feels urgent but isn't.

Deep work isn't dead. It's just been buried under a pile of notifications. Dig it out, give it space, and watch what happens.
